Sheffield Wednesday Honours

Sheffield Wednesday have four league titles, three FA Cups and one League Cup to their name, but their League Cup triumph - secured in 1991, with a strike from John Sheridan - is their only major trophy since the Second World War. They made history in 1993 by reaching both domestic cup finals in 1993, but lost 2-1 to Arsenal each time.
The 1993 FA Cup final replay was 2 minutes away from being the first ever FA cup final to be decided on penalties. In the 118th minute Arsenal had a corner, every Wednesdayite feared the worst. In goal we had the then England keeper, Chris Woods, who although a great shotstopper, was known to be weak on crosses, especially considering Arsenal's strong central defenders. Sure enough the sight of Chris Woods clawing the ball into the roof of the net signalled possibly the most depressing moment in any Sheffield Wednesday fan's recent memory.

Sheffield Wednesday formation

One of the most common questions asked about Sheffield Wednesday concerns the origins of the name. Let me explain: the football club was initially a cricket team formed in 1820 named The Wednesday Cricket Club after the day of the week when they played their matches. The footballing side of the club was established to keep the team together and fit during the winter months. Sheffield Wednesday football club was formed on the evening of Wednesday 4 September 1867 at a meeting at the Adelphi Hotel, Sheffield.
